Twenty Years Spent Transforming Quai des Antilles
Back in 2006, a partnership was established between Nantes ‒ Saint Nazaire Port, Nantes Metropolitan District Council and SAMOA, as part of the major redevelopment project for the Île de Nantes district.
The aim is clear: to redevelop the derelict industrial and port sites located at the tip of Île de Nantes island, starting with the conversion of Shed 21 – a former banana warehouse – into a new hub that symbolizes the island’s regeneration. This transformation relies on one key mechanism: the value-enhancement of real estate owned by the Port Authority.
Since the gradual cessation of traffic at the Quai Wilson facility, Nantes ‒ Saint Nazaire Port has thus developed its real-estate assets whilst retaining ownership. Beyond its role as a manager, the Port Authority is establishing itself as a fully-fledged player in urban development, in partnership with local authorities. It is organizing the progressive transformation of its real estate, adapting its legal frameworks and contributing to the economic development of the Regional Community. Shed 21, which has now been transformed into an iconic venue in Nantes, combining culture, leisure and restaurant facilities, is a prime example of this.
A Call For Expressions Of Interest
Today, this momentum is continued with the issue of a new call for expressions of interest to redevelop the upriver section of the Quai des Antilles site. The Port Authority is reaffirming its ambition: to revitalize the potential of its urban real estate, so as to value-enhance the Port Authority area in a sustainable manner and turn that real estate into a driver of value creation.
Between 2006 and the present day, through a series of projects Quai des Antilles has become a metropolitan destination that symbolises the revitalization of the City‒Port relationship. It perfectly illustrates the transformation of contemporary port areas, establishing itself as a redesigned meeting place open to the people of Nantes, situated between the City, the Port and the River.
