From 18th to 21st March, Claire Hugues, Vice-Chair of Pays de la Loire Regional Council with responsibility for maritime affairs, led a delegation comprising MRE industry professionals on a visit to the port and wind power markets in Portugal and Spain, more precisely to Lisbon, Sines, Bilbao, then Barcelona.

Nantes ‒ Saint Nazaire Port was represented in that delegation by Deputy Managing Director and Member of the Management Board Julien Dujardin, Development Director Jérôme Guiziou, and Engineering Director Francisco Sanchez.

The Iberian Peninsula has big ambitions when it comes to energy decarbonization, ambitions that are focussed in particular on the offshore wind power sector, with a combined target of 13 GW of installed and operational capacity by 2030, a figure comprising 3 GW for Spain and 10 GW for Portugal.

At the WindEurope 2024 Trade Show

The regional delegation also attended the WindEurope 2024 Trade Show, a gathering of international players in the offshore wind power sector, at which the Pays de la Loire Region had a strong representation this year, with over 40 Loire Estuary economic operators coming together for this event.

This visit made it possible to better understand the development goals for offshore wind power in Portugal and Spain, to analyse the economic development of that sector, to work on potential partnerships for Loire Estuary players, and to study how best to adapt the Region’s port facilities to meet the challenges of maritime decarbonization.
