Launch of the "Safe in Port" App

Launch of the "Safe in Port" App

30 June 2020

Nantes − Saint Nazaire Port recently launched "Safe in Port". This app makes it possible to communicate, in the form of alerts, real-time information about the traffic conditions on the port road system in Saint Nazaire. Developed in collaboration with Citykomi®, this new digital solution is the first end product of the deliberations of the Smart Port Hackathon, which was held by Nantes − Saint Nazaire Port in November of last year.

Movements of bridges and locks, roadworks, maintenance work on port civil engineering structures… each user of the "Safe in Port" app will now be informed on a real-time basis regarding events that may affect traffic conditions on the port road system in Saint Nazaire. Available for free on the mobile download platforms AppStore and Google Play, "Safe in Port" offers the possibility to subscribe to seven data feeds. Five feeds enable users to obtain immediate information about the status (open or closed to road traffic) of the bridges located at the heart of the Saint Nazaire port activity zone: the Pertuis swing bridge, the East Lock swing bridge, the upstream gate of the Joubert sluice dock, the South Lock bascule bridge and the South Lock swing bridge. The five feeds are automatically updated via a system that is connected to the automated machinery remotely controlled from the central control room located at the foot of the East Lock. Two other feeds give information about work in progress (Traffic Info) or events (Port + Info) that may cause disruption to traffic.

This new digital solution is the fruit of several months of work carried out with the project group formed following the Smart Port Hackathon. Over the course of three days in late November, digital technology companies, students, port professionals and industrial firms worked together to come up with solutions to current port-related issues. In January and March, "project boost" working sessions enabled the participants to further develop their solutions. The two teams that worked on Challenge N° 4 ("Providing real-time information regarding events that may affect traffic circulation on port road accesses") comprised personnel from Man Energy Solutions, Nantes − Saint Nazaire Port, Talan, the ISEMAR Applied Research Centre in Maritime Economics, the Urban Planning Agency for the Saint Nazaire Area (ADDRN), and Citykomi®, the Normandy-based start-up specializing in the development of apps. They came together to pursue their thinking and to produce the "Safe in Port" app.

The Citykomi® Alert Concept

"Safe in Port" is built on the Citykomi® mobile app concept, which makes it possible to inform users on a real-time basis, via alerts issued by a communicator. Since 2016, this solution has notably been adopted by the Normandy Ports Authority (Caen-Ouistreham, Cherbourg and Dieppe), ports which are confronted with port area traffic circulation issues that are similar to those facing Saint Nazaire.

"Safe in Port" supplements a more global information system, which is intended to help to improve traffic flow for neighbouring residents and the some 10 000 workers passing through the Saint Nazaire port activity zone daily. In January, Nantes − Saint Nazaire Port became an official data provider for the collaborative app Waze, which can now take account of bridge and lock movements in the routes proposed by the navigation app. In September, connected traffic signs are going to be installed at locations on Boulevard des Apprentis, Avenue Antoine-Bourdelle and Boulevard René-Coty.
