Rail Access

The Nantes – Saint Nazaire Port Authority owns and manages its own port-based rail network, and possesses dual access by rail: via the Loire Estuary line (Nantes-Angers-Tours-Paris) and via the Rennes-Le Mans-Paris line. All the port facilities have a rail service provision that is branched onto the national rail network.

The specifications of the port-based rail network permit complete trainloads to be received at all the port facilities, without any particular gauge or load restrictions. A combined transport offer linking into the growth in maritime motorway provisions and liner services will soon complement the rail service offer for the pre- or post-carriage of maritime exports or imports.

The development of the port-based rail network is part of the Central Government strategy with regard to rail freight, as decided upon in 2009.
