Contribution by Nantes − Saint Nazaire Port at the Port of the Future Forum

The Port of the Future Forum took place in Lille (North-East France), on 24th and 25th September. 230 people were in attendance for this 9th edition, which was punctuated by round-table discussions. This annual gathering focussing on innovation is the opportunity for port players to share their thoughts on what the port of tomorrow will be and do.

"Pooling heat production: the example of the industrial and urban heating network in the Saint Nazaire and Montoir de Bretagne industrial and port activity zone" was the theme of the round-table discussion in which Nantes − Saint Nazaire Port Authority Director of Planning and Development Franck Mousset took part. Like many other ports, Nantes − Saint Nazaire Port offers an economic model that is closely related to the energy history of the regional community of which it forms a part. The Port of Nantes − Saint Nazaire is the site of an EDF power station (only two coal tranches of which are still operating), and of a refinery and a large LNG terminal.

New Growth Drivers

Carbon-emission, coal, oil and gas energy flows have been and continue to be the Port’s principal source of income, since they represent over two thirds of its revenues. Global warming and the issues associated with energy transition undermine and challenge that model, however. This realization has led Nantes − Saint Nazaire Port to seek sustainable growth drivers (delivering increased property value, developing new activities and services), but also to set itself the ambition of becoming as of now the reference port for energy transition.

Accommodating an industrial facility to assemble wind turbine components for France’s first offshore wind farm and the LNG engine retrofit work on the dredger Samuel de Champlain are among some of the most significant achievements in recent years. Today, to go further in an energy mix moving towards decarbonization, Nantes − Saint Nazaire Port is contributing to a partnership-based initiative to develop a green hydrogen sector on the Loire Estuary, by working both on the production issues and on the distribution or consumption issues involved.
