The Many Facets of the Upriver Port Facilities

Markers

  • 2,2 million tonnes of traffic overall at the Nantes facilities in 2018
  • 620 000 tonnes of grain and cereals
  • 187000 tonnes of recycling products (including scrap metal)
  • 60 000 tonnes of timber imported
  • Nearly one million tonnes of sand

Roche Maurice: Western France’s Granary

Lying on the north bank of the River Loire, opposite Cheviré, the Roche Maurice facility is one of the major grain stores in Greater Western France. It is operated by InVivo, a farming cooperative group which is France’s leading exporter of grain and cereals. On average, a little over one million tonnes of grain and cereals pass through its installations every year.

Changes at Cheviré

Until recently, Cheviré was a stronghold of the forest products sector in France. But as imports of tropical timber have ceased, its influence has been reduced. The terminal still has an active role in this sector, but with the focus on northern timber, notably with the Wolseley Group’s timber framework production facility. Today at Cheviré, other traffic sectors are ramping up operations, based around consignments of recycled scrap metal (Derichebourg) and more broadly speaking the urban services functions that the terminal could fulfil for the Nantes urban area. Cheviré also has a busy sand terminal serving the requirements of the building and civil engineering sector.

Logistical Potential

The Cheviré terminal possesses assets that could make it a large-scale logistics platform. The facility is located beside the Nantes ring road, is directly connected to the road network and is linked up both to the rail network and via inland waterway to the Montoir de Bretagne terminals. What is more, reserves of land are available at the site.

Cheviré: not just a Heavyweight in the Timber Division…
With 90 000 tonnes imported in 2009, Cheviré remains a leading centre of operations in the timber sector, its know-how being recognized Europewide and even further afield. It should be noted that the facility accommodates the highest concentration of timber professionals and equipment in France, alongside the largest wholesale market for imported timber. Cheviré also handles other types of traffic, such as recycling products, supported by the installation of a metal crusher-grinder by AFM Recycling. Lastly, Cheviré has recently reorganized its sand operations to anticipate the future development of sand imports.

… but also a Large-Scale Logistics Facility
The Cheviré logistics facility is located close to the City of Nantes ring road and is directly linked to the road network. It is also connected to the rail network and has an inland waterway link with Montoir de Bretagne. Its land reserves are proving attractive to many industrial companies wishing to locate warehousing facilities on the site.

Quai Wilson: On a Cruise Course
With cargo traffic being increasingly handled by the downriver facilities, at Cheviré and at Roche Maurice, the Quai Wilson facility in the Ile de Nantes District of the City has been turned over since 2004 to the reception of cruise liners. On average, it receives half-a-dozen cruise liner calls each year.
