A 2nd Maritime Motorway

At the start of May, under the European Union’s Marco Polo II Programme, 3 million euros were allocated to the Spanish shipping line Suardiaz for the creation of a maritime motorway service between Montoir de Bretagne and Vigo at the end of the year. Suardiaz already runs a twice-weekly link between the two Ports. The EU funding will permit the addition of a third call and a strengthened service provision.

The longest established liner service at the Port, the link between Montoir and Vigo has existed since 1974. It was taken over early in 2013 by Suardiaz, which made the successful bid in response to the invitation for tenders by Gefco, the logistical service provider to the PSA Group. Making two calls a week at the Montoir de Bretagne ro-ro terminal, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the ro-ro vessel Suar Vigo mainly transports Gefco road trailers and new Citroën Picasso 2s, Peugeot Partners and Citroën Berlingos built at PSA’s Vigo plant. This vessel offers a modulable capacity of 110 trailers and 250 cars loaded simultaneously or 1 400 light vehicles.

3 Calls and a Second Vessel

The new service between Montoir and Vigo will add to Nantes – Saint Nazaire Port’s maritime motorway service offer, since a scheduled link between Montoir and Gijón offering 3 calls a week has existed since September 2010. The transformation of this service into a maritime motorway provision with a third call and a second vessel will serve to offer more possibilities for the inclusion of other types of traffic. As is already the case, the service will further make it possible to extend export options to other, more distant destinations via the many transhipment possibilities available in Vigo for ro-ro freight (the Mediterranean Basin, South America, etc.).

At Montoir, the Somaloir Company represents the Shipping Line and provides cargo handling services via its subsidiary company Manocean/MSO.
