East Lock: Civil Engineering Refurbishment Finished

Started in October 2017, the civil engineering refurbishment work on the east lock was finished in mid-March. Poor workmanship during a previous operation undertaken back in 2001 had resulted in a significant fissuring of the lock side walls. The refurbishment involved the complete rebuilding of the reinforced concrete walls, which are necessary to secure the two leaves. The large-scale maintenance turnaround was also the occasion to fully clean and repair the downstream gate and to overhaul the gate mechanism.

Once the civil engineering work was completed, several more stages succeeded one another, including lock refilling operations, tests and adjustments. The progressive recommissioning of the lock is currently under way. It is expected that the lock will be reopened to maritime traffic on 16th April
