Montoir Fast Tracks to Competitiveness

A 350-metre extension of the quays of the general cargo and container terminal is planned at Montoir de Bretagne, thereby increasing the linear development to 1 300 metres. Following the public inquiry held from 24th June to 24th July, the inquiry commissioner has made a favourable recommendation to the Prefect of Loire Atlantique. The prefectoral authorization permitting the work to proceed is expected in the autumn.

The work should start in 2014 and be completed by the end of 2016. Initially, around 200 metres of the new quay will be utilized by Montoir’s centre for industrial operations. The 150 metres extending upstream from the current general cargo and container terminal will make it possible to receive large-sized, 6 000 to 8 000 TEU container ships as opposed to the current capacity of 2 000 to 4 000 TEUs. The project incorporates plans to extend the LNG turning basin in order to ensure safe conditions of navigation for such large-sized vessels in the presence of LNG carriers at the adjoining terminal.

Eventually all 350 metres will be used to handle container traffic.
